  • JUBAN,SorsogonNov 22 2010The latest eruption of Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon triggers evacuation of families in nearby villages at the foot of the grumbling volcano, a military official said.

    LtCol Santiago Enginco, Commanding Officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion based in Juban town said that he immediately deployed 6 military vehicles to assist the evacuation at around 8:00am yesterday, November 21 .

  • CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, CamSur Nov 20, 2010An  off-duty soldier who took a leave to visit his family was gunned down by suspected NPA rebels near his home in Legaspi City, a military official said here today.

    Colonel Leoncio Cirunay, Operations Officer of the 9th Infantry Division, said that Private First Class Ronnel Galvez, 27, was unarmed when he was assassinated by two gunmen at around 11:00pm last night (19 November).

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 19  2010 - At least 41 volcanic earthquakes jolted Mount Bulusan on Friday, the highest number so far detected by seismic instruments for the past five days, signifying that pressure is still building up and this may probably lead to more ash and steam laden explosions, volcanologists said.

    The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin reported that seismic network detected a total of 41 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 17 -– In response to the shortage of weathermen in the country, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda on Tuesday said he is all out in supporting the plan of Bicol University (BU) to offer climate science-related courses leading to a degree in meteorology.

    “It is a given fact that our weather bureau is being confronted by a shortage in weather forecasters and that we need science-oriented colleges or universities offering courses leading to this line of expertise,” Salceda said.

  • Daet, Camarines Norte (18 November) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here has conducted an enforcement activity for the substandard products like Christmas lights.

    Beth Parro, Senior Specialist of the Consumer Welfare Division, said that of the 11 inspected last week, there were no apprehensions selling substandard products like Christmas lights.

    She said that genuine Christmas lights should have an ICC mark with a control number reflecting that of the ICC certificate of an establishment.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 17  -- Intermittent rains caused lahar from the slopes of Bulusan Volcano to flow into a river along Barangay Patag and another in Gulang-Gulang, both in Irosin town, and the Rangas river in Juban town.

    The rivers, which turned grayish due to volcanic sand, ash and similar tiny debris, had lahar which was a combination of rainwater with less than 60 percent sediment, said Phivolcs Resident Volcanologist Ed Laguerta in an interview at the Bulusan Observatory in Sorsogon City.
