Sumilao farmer leader gunned dead

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --The leader of the Sumilao Farmers, who walked 1,700 kilometers from Bukidnon to Manila in 2007, was shot dead before midnight Friday. Ka Rene Penas, 51, a barangay kagawad of San Vicente, Sumilao, Bukidnon, was on a motorcycle with two other farmers on their way home when they were shot by still unknown assailants.

VFA works to foster servility, prostitution and corruption

We from the Bikolano Aliance for Nationalism against Balikatan (BAN BALIKATAN) very much disagree with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The only things that work in the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) is that it fosters the US trampling on our sovereignty, prostitution, more human rights violations and now even corruption.

The proposal that emerged from the sessions of the Naga City Executive Council on Tercentenary Celebration that the traditional and annual Peñafrancia Civic-military parades be held before traslacion and not during the week of the Fiesta itself has been received well by some. For Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNNCI) president Albert Bercasio, those to be negatively impacted are students and their parents who are joining the said parades, and not owners of businesses.

The landlord-dominated Congress, led by the relatives of President Arroyo, voted Wednesday night to add five more years to the implementation of a 20-year-old agrarian-reform program that has failed to uplift the lives of peasants and farmers in the Philippines. And critics say the new proposed law is even worse than the original.

WHO expert meeting makes no decision on pandemic alert raise

GENEVA, June 6 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) concluded an emergency expert meeting on Friday without making a decision to raise its pandemic alert level to the highest phase of 6. At the Emergency Committee meeting, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan noted that the world remains in pandemic alert phase 5 and reaffirmed that WHO will continue to monitor the situation closely in all countries reporting cases of the A/H1N1 influenza, the WHO said in a statement.
