Bikolano writers in 35th issue of CCP’s Ani

11 November 2009, Pasay City - The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Literary Arts Division will launch Ani 35, The Pinoy as Asian issue, on November 26, 2009, 6:00 p.m., at the CCP Ramp with some of the featured authors reading from their works. Several works by Bikolano writers are included in the said publication.

UNEP to confer honorary degree to Batangas governor

IRIGA CITY -- This City of Superstar will have, as its guest another superstar as the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) is set to confer to Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities in recognition of her exemplary contributions to Philippine cinema and government service during a fitting ceremony on Nov. 20 at the university gymnasium here.

MANILA - The big oil players have put their conflict with Malacañang over Executive Order No. 839 to a higher plane through legal maneuver and economic sabotage. The legal move came in the form of a Pilipinas Shell petition before a Makati trial court asking for a temporary restraining order on the controversial directive. Meanwhile, the economic sabotage came in the form of deliberate restriction on supply that resulted in some pump stations temporarily closing down or reducing service hours.

I am in the middle of my research, which is the revisiting of Frank Lynch's universe. His field site was in Canaman, a small town where he witnessed inequality that was part of the society. The sociologists of that period talked about structured inequality. It was, however, an inequality that has a sweet component to it: a seeming acceptance of the world in that unequal world.

November 9, 2009. Paris is singing for freedom. Thousands have gathered on the Palace de la Concorde to celebrate Germany and Europe. In Los Angeles a wall is being torn down. In Warsaw people are dancing on a wall and another wall is bricked up on the Spanish Stairs in Rome. In London a wall of ice bricks is gradually fading, melting till disappear. November 9 is a day the world celebrates with Germany.

On Friday last, I fetched my daughter from school at Poveda. If you happen to do this routine, you normally scout almost every student on sight, whether walking or running towards the exit gate, just sitting idly by, reading or chatting with friends, laughing or crying, or otherwise simply playing tag or hide and seek on the grounds until you finally see your child. For sure, this may just be one ordinary scene in what we call life, but which on deeper reflection should make us thankful for the gift of children.
