UNEP librarians tour academic libraries

To further enhance their skills and develop their oral proficiency in English, librarians from selected academic institutions attended a 2-day conference held May 27 at the C & E Information Resource Center in Quezon City. Joining other participants were eight library personnel from the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) and two (2) from Alfelor Sr. Memorial Colleges (ASMC). The activity also served as a respite from their usual routine of rummaging through the shelves of books and reference materials.

Sorsogon studies LED lighting design to save power

Sorsogon City (11 June) -- In the light of crafting ways to minimize electric power consumption, the fifth year electrical engineering students of the Sorsogon State College here, have finished a research study on Light Emitting Diode (LED) as an alternative electronic component in designing a lighting device. The design proposed by Zendy Dematera, Dyronne P. Ajas, Gissell C. Dogillo, and Rusan James Freo was adjudged best among the six competing groups and was given credit by the SSC in its recognition ceremony last March.

PA soldiers plant mangroves in Calabanga

PILI, Camarines Sur, June 7 - Philippine Army (PA) soldiers recently braved the scorching heat of the sun and planted some 2,000 mangrove seedlings along the shorelines of Cagsao, a coastal village in Calabanga town in Camarines Sur. Major Harold Cabunoc, 9th ID Spokesperson said that a platoon of soldiers joined the mangrove tree planting activity together with other stakeholders from different organizations, including local residents of Cagsao village.

BIR's Oplan Kandado closes Naga fast food

Naga City (11 June) -- Determined in its campaign to run after tax evaders, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here has ordered the closure of one business establishment for failing to declare its real income and warned others which continue to defy payment of appropriate taxes to the government. RDO 65 Revenue District Officer Socorro La Fuente, along with BIR Regional Director Atty. Diosdado Mendoza, recently led the implementation of closure order to Triboo Grill located at Mayon Avenue here as part of the BIR's OPLAN KANDADO campaign.

Naga to celebrate 62nd charter anniversary

The City of Naga will be commemorating its 62nd Charter Anniversary on June 18, Friday without much fanfare. In line with the city government's policy of simplicity, according to organizers of the event, the charter anniversary will include the oath-taking of newly elected city officials, as well as the unveiling of the new Plaza de Nueva Caceres and inauguration of the renovated public market. A 7 AM mass at the San Franciso Parish church will kick off activities on June 18. Later the newly-elected city councilors, vice mayor and mayor will take their oaths of office.

No extension on gun ban - Verzosa

Legazpi City (11 June) -- Police chief General Jesus Verzosa said Sunday (June 6) that the Philippine National Police (PNP) will continue to issue permit to carry firearms to gun owners but the agency will ensure more stringent requirements to facilitate monitoring, control and misuse of the said permit. Verzosa, speaking at the PNP's Legacy Run Program at the Camp Gen. Simeon Ola, stressed that there is a need to control the carrying of firearms among gun owners to avoid abuse.

The din of outrage and uproar had filled the Naga City Gymnasium last June 1 as member-consumers of CASURECO II congregated and vented their ire and frustration over the power cooperative's unannounced, unexplained, and unjustified power rate hike. At the center of the maelstrom was CASURECO II's jacking up of the cost of electricity from P7.00 per kilowatt-hour (KWH) to P12.28 for the month of May, without consultation from the consumers and without prior announcement. The ensuing effect was member-consumers being stunned and jolted by electric bill costs increased almost by 100%.

Naga City (3 June) -- Outraged member-consumers of Casureco II have protested the increase in the power rates effected clandestinely by the power cooperative, and have signed resolutions contesting the said hike. In a general assembly of members held last June 1 at the Naga City Gymnasium, an estimated 5,000 irate members unanimously approved prepared resolutions presented by Naga City Legal Officer Atty. Angel Ojastro.
