Remembering a school

I always remember Ateneo de Naga as a school that, for a long time, stood without a gate. But I also remember it as one school that was forbidding to the outsiders. And for a long time, there was a big outside for the school.

VATICAN CITY, June 11, 2010- The Eucharistic celebration with the greatest number of concelebrants in the church's history, 55 of whom are Filipinos, was recorded in Rome on Friday. MANILA, June 12, 2010- A Catholic bishop has joined calls for the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee to form an independent body to assess the just-concluded automated elections. Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo along with other conveners of the Automated Election System Watch (AES Watch) made the appeal in a letter sent to the House committee.

Priests as bridge-builders

There's no group of men in history quite like that of the Catholic priesthood. What is it that makes it so unique? Its celibacy, most obviously. But there's also dedication to service for which the priests have been a byword, especially in India. And then, there's its creativity and scholarship. So the priesthood for me has been all three, in different measures, during the last 35 years (almost) I've been a Jesuit priest.

I nearly ran over Gloria Diaz many years ago when I was learning to drive. If it had not been for my driving instructor's nervous bark, I could have run over the former Miss U and I could have died! You see, Gloria Diaz was an icon of my childhood, a figure that dominated the many awakenings of my teenage years. I could not, in fact, recall a time when I did not know who she is, or, for that matter, who Margarita Moran is.

A new independence: Automation

With the proclamation of Noynoy Aquino and Jojo Binay as president-elect and vice-president-elect, respectively, we have sealed a new chapter in our democracy: automation. Finally, automation has freed us from the manual process of electing our leaders that only perpetuated large-scale cheating as seen in GMA's "Hello Garci".
