LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 8–- Because to their disaster risk reduction strategy, the Albay Provincial Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) reported on Saturday that no casualty was recorded despite the 73 landslides brought by continuous heavy rains in the province for the past 18 days.

As of Jan. 8, the provincial government of Albay has evacuated a total of 12,344 and 59,526 families affected by flooding and landslides, respectively.

PHIVOLCS resident volcanologist for Bicol, Eduardo P. Laguerta warned that an estimated 100,000 cubic-meters of ashfall deposits on Mt. Bulusan’s upslope threatens to inundate the four river channels at the base of the volcano once these are triggered by heavy rains.

LEGAZPI CITY (3 December 2010) — Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) regional director Rafael Alejandro IV disclosed on Thursday that during the OCD updating conference on Mt. Bulusan at Camp Simeon Ola in this city, PHIVOLCS resident volcanologist for Bicol, Eduardo P. Laguerta warned that an estimated 100,000 cubic-meters of ashfall deposits on Mt. The SOMO declaration that took effect last November 22 covers the 10-kilometer radius from the crater of the volcano whose current restlessness has been placed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) under alert level one.

They fear massive environmental degradation and economic dislocation of thousands of fisher folk around the bay should the mining operations push through.

The mining would be initiated by Bogo Resources and Mining Corporation (BRMC), a Filipino-Korean firm.

LtCol Santiago Enginco, Commanding Officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion based here said that he employed the 35-man Disaster Response Operations Platoon together with another platoon from his unit to clean the affected school facilities.

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 17  -- Intermittent rains caused lahar from the slopes of Bulusan Volcano to flow into a river along Barangay Patag and another in Gulang-Gulang, both in Irosin town, and the Rangas river in Juban town.

The rivers, which turned grayish due to volcanic sand, ash and similar tiny debris, had lahar which was a combination of rainwater with less than 60 percent sediment, said Phivolcs Resident Volcanologist Ed Laguerta in an interview at the Bulusan Observatory in Sorsogon City.

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 19  - At least 41 volcanic earthquakes jolted Mount Bulusan on Friday, the highest number so far detected by seismic instruments for the past five days, signifying that pressure is still building up and this may probably lead to more ash and steam laden explosions, volcanologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin reported that seismic network detected a total of 41 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.

Paje has directed the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to conduct an assessment of local iron deposits as possible raw material feeds to an integrated iron and steel facility that the government is planning to establish in the country.

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 12  -- Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon province belched on Friday morning a voluminous ash plume 700 meters above its crater rim that drifted and covered villages in the southwest flank of the volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the phreatic explosion occurred at 6:59 a.m., sending light gray ash column that was accompanied by rumbling sounds, a typical characteristic of Bulusan's restive state.

Ash falls were reported in the villages in the towns of Irosin and Juban.

1st Lieutenant Oliver Dela Cruz, Commanding Officer of the Charlie Company of the 49th Infantry Battalion said that more evacuees from the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone in Sitio Gimaloto (sub-village) in Ingladian village of Casiguran town, trooped to the evacuation center in Escuala village starting at around 5pm yesterday.

No one was reported injured during the latest explosion. Soldiers of the 49th Infantry Battalion are placed on high alert to assist in the evacuation of the residents in the 4-kilometer danger zone.

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 6, 2010 - Sorsogon province's Mt. Bulusan spewed a grayish ash column 600 meters high Saturday, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to raise Alert Level 1.

Phivolcs reported observing explosions as thick ash clouds hovered over the volcano's summit.

Seismic instruments recorded a 57-second ash explosion at about 8:11 a.m. Saturday, Phivolcs noted.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said its seismic instruments already recorded four volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.
