MANILA, June 4, 2010-The Department of Education (DepEd) will push through with the pilot testing of sex education programs in public schools when classes open on June 15.

According to Education Secretary Mona Valisno, "piloting of sex education in selected public schools this coming school year is not suspended."

She said that the directive of Malacañang is to consult with the bishops and not suspend the "piloting of sex education."

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier expressed its opposition on the inclusion of sex education in the curriculum this school year.

CBCP has maintained its stand that sex education is the responsibility of the parents and not of the school.

The bishops feared that the program could lead to more premarital sex and early pregnancies.

DepEd said there will be 80 elementary schools and 79 high schools in all parts of the country wherein sex education will be included in their subjects.

Sex education in elementary level is currently incorporated in Geography, Home Economics, and Good Manners and Right Conduct while in the secondary level it is integrated in Science and Health, Values, Filipino and English subjects. (CBCPNews)

Sex Education needs to be accurate

Sex education is essential if we are to halt the growing number of unwanted pregnancies in the Philipines. For too long this essential aspect of education has been neglected. A key aspect must be to look at case studies of girls who have become pregnant at an early age and get the pupils to figure out how these could have been prevented. Rc Helicopters
