NAIA,May 8 (PNA) -- Boxing great Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao and party planed in at dawn Friday minus the accompanying grandiose welcome treat befitting a sports hero. The Philippine Airlines (PAL) plane flight PR 103 carrying the world boxing icon and his Team Pacquiao touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport(NAIA) Centennial Terminal 2 at exactly 6 a.m. from Los Angeles, California following his victorious knockout match with British boxing champion Ricky 'Hitman' Hatton in second round in MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas,Nevada last May 3.

WHO praises ASEAN for quick response to H1N1 virus

BANGKOK, May 8 (TNA) - The World Health Organization on Friday praised the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) countries for quickly instituting their cooperative response to the H1N1 virus outbreak. Speaking in Bangkok on Friday, Dr. Shin Young Soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, commended the region's public health ministers from the ASEAN countries plus China, Japan, and South Korea in Bangkok.

A colonial memory

I am not giving up yet the journal called "Philippine Public Schools." I am getting answers that are beyond the anecdotal and I am beginning to understand now the nostalgia for good education - under colonial administration it may be. The information on English language acquisition and the creation of a system to instil good manners and right conduct are gems about the past that may explain what we are today as people.

Naga boy bags international math tilt slot

John Reinier B. Bulaong, a sophomore of the Ateneo de Naga University High School Department grabbed one of the slots for the International Mathematics contest of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. Besting 70,000 students from all over the country in a series of contests, Bulaong is slated to represent the country later this year along with the top 25 percent of the contestants according to the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG) which administered the contest here. Certificates of Distinction were also awarded to the qualifiers.

Typhoon Emong leaves 20 dead in Northern Luzon

MANILA, May 8 (PNA) -- At least 20 persons died and many others were injured as typhoon "Emong" battered Northern Luzon with strong winds and heavy rains, relief and disaster response officials said today. Defense Secretary and National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) chairman Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said 12 fatalities were initially reported from the worst-hit Pangasinan, where he conducted an aerial survey to check on the damage caused by the howler.
