MANILA, Philippines (Dec 22, 2011) – In one fell swoop Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Jesus Mupas denied the motions of detained former President Gloria Macapal-Arroyo for a Christmas furlough and use of cellular phones and laptop.

The former president had requested the court to allow her to spend Christmas in her Quezon City residence from Dec. 23 to Jan. 2 and to use a laptop and her mobile phone while detained at the government-run Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City. All these were denied as the court in effect sustained the stroung objection of the Commission on Elections  to Arroyo’s requests.

MANILA, Philippines (Dec 21, 2011) President Aquino visited the flood-ravaged cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete yesterday, declaring a state of national calamity in the aftermath of the devastation caused by tropical storm “Sendong” as a massive relief operation continued.

As thousands of workers search and retrieve decomposing bodies, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has placed the death toll from the storm at close to a thousand, more accurately 998, with an undetermined number still missing, mostly from the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

MANILA, Philippines (Dec 13, 2011)–  Former Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Benjamin Abalos turned himself over Pasay City regional trial court (RTC) that issued the warrant for his arrest.

The Pasay City RTC Branch 112 had issued a warrant for the arrest of Abalos who faces charges of electoral sabotage having been  tagged as one of the main players in the alleged rigging of the 2007 elections...

MANILA, Philippines (Dec 12, 2011) - With swiftness that suprised many including the senators, congressmen-allies of President Aquino moved yesterday to impeach Chief Justice Renato Corona for alleged betrayal of public trust, violation of the Constitution, and graft and corruption.

In a dizzying turn of events, 188 congressmen – almost twice the minimum 95 signatures required for trransmittal to the Senate -  signed an impeachment complaint drafted by the committee on justice, leveling eight charges against Corona.

DAET, Camarines Norte (Dec 8, 2011) - First  termer Camarines Norte 2nd district Representative Elmer Ellaga Panotes has 2,300 college scholars coming from 7 towns of his congressional district, including the capital town of Daet, Vinzons, Talisay, Mercedes, Basud, San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Vicente.

Spokesperson, Marichu Avila, said  that the college scholars of the congressman have swelled to such big number because scholarship in college education is a priority of Congressman Panotes.

MANILA (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government welcomed on Friday the improvement on the country's score on corruption perception index by the Transparency International.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte expressed hope that the Philippines' score will go up further.

"We have seen in the past few years that there were incremental increases in the rankings. However, we hope that our efforts will also be taken into consideration," said Valte.

Yesterday President Aquino’s questioned the Supreme Court’s (SC) decisions, particularly the temporary restraining order on the travel ban against former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

This was the reaction of Akbayan party-list group today as it assailed the camp of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for claiming that there is a plot to do harm to the former president.

MANILA, Philippine (Nov. 5, 2011) – Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla said in a statement that half-sister Ramona’s flight was a sign of guilt.

"Ramona's flight is a sign of guilt that she has knowledge and direct participation in the commission of the crime," Revilla said in a statement read by his spokesperson, Aldy Pagulayan, over radio dzMM.

The senator said that if his siblings are indeed involved in the killing of their own brother, they should suffer the "full force and weight of the law and suffer the penultimate consequences of their involvement as principal accomplices or accessories as the case may be."

MANILA, Philippines (Aug. 24, 2011) - As Libyan rebels take control of most part of Tripoli and a final battle with remaining loyalists of strongman Moammar Gadhafi looming, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ordered yesterday the forced repatriation of some 1,600 Filipinos in Libya.

MANILA, Philippines (Aug. 24, 2011) - As Libyan rebels take control of most part of Tripoli and a final battle with remaining loyalists of strongman Moammar Gadhafi looming, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ordered yesterday the forced repatriation of some 1,600 Filipinos in Libya.

According to several reports, the rebels now control 80 to 90 percent of the city of Tripoli and are in celebratory mood. But isolated clashes and gunfires still continue and Gadhafi is not showing sign he is ready to give up soon.

There was no big deal ordinarily when Bicol Express Train 611 arrived in Naga City this morning 4 hours late - were it not on its much anticipated maiden trip after years in limbo.

The cause of the delay was a recently discovered eroded portion of the railroad less than 40 kilometers away from the train's destination, Naga City.

Legazpi City (8 December) -- In a joint maritime law enforcement patrol, operatives of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon (Navforsol) and Albay Provincial Fishery Office (APFO) apprehended F/B Draven Cedrick for illegal fishing activities around 2:40 am on December 5, 2010 at vicinity about four nautical miles off south of Barangay Maonon, Ligao City, a navy officer disclosed to PIA News Service.
