Four players of the fully energized Ateneo team registered double-digit scores - Nico Salva (19 points), Kiefer Ravena (13), Emman Monfort (13) and Tonino Gonzaga (12).

It was a close escape for the Falcons as they got their sixth win in eight outings in UAAP Season 74 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-2 Nuyles eluded La Salle’s Oda Tampus with a spin move then unleashed a jump shot that found nothing but net with 0.8 second left.

It was a rout as the Eagles, banking on its vaunted defense and perimeter shooting, cruised to an easy 77-57 victory over the Maroons to maintain solo lead.

June 6 marked the opening of school year 2011 to 2012. Once again, we focus our attention on education. We hear the same litany of decades-old issues: lack of classrooms, substandard quality of instruction, lack of teachers, low salaries, increased tuition fees and miscellaneous charges, etc.

But the most basic issue, especially among our economically challenged sector, is getting into school. And here allow me to share yet another football story.

Forgive my bias, but if there’s one proven thing that can open educational and job opportunities for our not-so-privileged brothers and sisters, it is football.

Discussions now on whether to divide Camarines Sur Province into two remind us of continuing massive grinding poverty here and in the entire Bikol region. Once again, we are confronted with the sad fact that Bikol remains the “tambay” capital of the Philippines, that is, most people have no work or can’t get any jobs for lack of education or training. And 4 out of 10 live below the poverty threshold.
