MANILA, Philippines (Dec 13, 2011) - Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago becomes the first from an Asian developing country to get elected as a magistrate of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said today that Santiago garnered 79 votes to earn one of the seats in the ICC.
Santiago had said that she would resign as senator if she gets elected to sit as a judge in the ICC.
Santiago, however, clarified in a television interview that she did not have to immediately leave her seat in the Senate.
