“May the Lord grant comfort to the peoples of South-East Asia, particularly Thailand and the Philippines, who are still enduring grave hardships as a result of the recent floods,” our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI said in his Christmas message “Urbi et Orbi.”

“May the Lord grant comfort to the peoples of South-East Asia, particularly Thailand and the Philippines, who are still enduring grave hardships as a result of the recent floods,” our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI said in his Christmas message “Urbi et Orbi.”

The floods in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City and other parts of Mindanao left over a thousand dead and scores of families homeless. We sympathize with the victims as we all send over whatever assistance we could muster.

They say that children are a great comfort in old age. But how about supporting almost two dozens of children and hordes of grandchildren?

Such is life for Nanay Amy after being widowed and left to single-handedly fend for 21 children and grandchildren with her meager salary as a metro aide.

MANILA, Dec. 31, 2011–The crusade for a culture of life is an advocacy of truth, and based on the goings-on in 2011 alone, the pro-life advocacy has covered a lot of ground and, inadvertently, saw much success in promoting the truth.

Though reproductive health (RH) legislation in the Philippines is not new — being proposed, discussed, rejected and resurrected for decades now — 2012 saw significant developments in its promotion as well as in its opposition. The year ended with the RH bill reaching the period of interpellation in both chambers of Congress, heated debates in progress when legislative sessions went on adjournment on the final month of the year. Mass actions such as rallies and prayer vigils to express opposition to the bill happened not just in the country’s capital, but in many other cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Civil society seemed to wake up to the folly of the legislative measure and wanted to be heard loud and clear.

MANILA, Philippines (Dec 29,2011) - Four days before the New Year, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) released its Fourth Quarter Social Weather Survey, conducted from Dec. 3 to 7, showing that 95 percent of Filipino adults said they would welcome 2012 with hope while only 4% would face the New Year with fear.

Despite gloomy global economic forecasts and a string of natural calamities that hit the country this year, the figure is two points higher than the 93 percent who entered 2011 with hope and matches the all-time high of 95 percent recorded in 2002 who were hopeful entering 2003, the SWS said.

It is the last day of the year and even if this terminating of the year is a fairly recent human invention, we are convinced really that the 31st of December of any year is the last day of the year. And, sorrow and regrets are fashionable and smart response to this realization.

I step out of the house while the wind howls like an old man with gout. The weather is appropriate: bleak now, bright now, with just the right amount of sorrow. It is the last day of the year and even if this terminating of the year is a fairly recent human invention, we are convinced really that the 31st of December of any year is the last day of the year. And, sorrow and regrets are fashionable and smart response to this realization.

It’s a New Year! As always, we look to our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI for his traditional message for January 1 – World Day of Peace. This time he focuses on “Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace.”

We will know if He is truly born in us, if we are able to look forward for the coming New Year with great hope. Love is truly powerful for it is “the greatest of them all” (Corinthians 13:13). Let us fill this New Year with the love we learned from Jesus this Christmas.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all!

It is often a spectacular scene to behold how the revered Christmas season lightens up the souls of people, enabling each one of us to sing a happy Christmas tune. For a time it helps us forget the daily grind and complexities of life. But then again the Christmas spirit is not simply a feeling to enjoy. It is an encounter with a person. Love which is the cause of this joyful season ceases to be a vague idea or feeling but is now born in flesh, in the person of Jesus.

Some people have New Year’s Resolutions and some people buy round fruits. If I may borrow a classic comment from Cristy Fermin who is consistent with her abhorrence of Kris Aquino, which I share: Kris is someone who, it seems does not have New Year’s resolutions. The punch line is this: kaya si Kris inuulit niya ang sarili na parang kasaysayan.

Now, who says, there is no gem in talk shows. That’s classic. And I love it.
