MANILA, Philippines (Feb 28, 2012) - The prosecution presented a video of the Supreme Court (SC) spokesman's press conference, the Chief Jusctice's old service records and testimony of a doctor of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo were presented yesterday at the resumption of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona - all aiming to support allegation of the latter's partiality towards the former President.

SC spokesman Midas Marquez violated the internal rules of the High Tribunal for hastily announcing the Nov. 15, 2011 temporary restraining order (TRO) on the travel ban on former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, claimed Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares yesterday as the prosecution panel presented video footage taken by television network ABS-CBN Channel 2 showing Marquez’s press conference that afternoon.

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur (Feb 25, 2012) - Four people lay dead in a clash between Army soldiers and a band of NPA rebels in a hinterland village of Camarines Norte early afternoon today.

Lt Col Epimaco Macalisang, the Commanding Officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion, said that he sent a platoon of his unit after receiving a 'hot information' regarding the extortion activity of the rebels in Malaya village, Labo town.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 24, 2012) - The portion of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima's testimony that are narrations of facts contained in a published dissenting opinion of Supreme Court justice shall remain in the records of the impeachment court, but her statements alleging irregularities and acts of partiality shall be considered hearsay.

This was Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s ruling yesterday on the statements of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima pertaining to the alleged partiality of Chief Justice Renato Corona in exercising his authority over other justices that led to the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the travel ban against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last year.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 21, 2012) - Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is now on call to take the witness stand as prosecution witness in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona before the Senate.

Many anticipate a face off between De Lima and the equally feisty Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago who is known for vitriolic remarks against prosecution witnesses and lawyers.

“I’ll just have to answer the questions directly, I’ll answer the questions to the best of my ability,” de Lima told reporters in an ambush interview yesterday when asked how she was preparing to answer possible questions from Santiago.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 21, 2012) - Citing badly crafted Articles of Impeachment, presiding Senator-Judge Juan Ponce Enrile disallowed this afternoon the testimony of an exective the country's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL), during the resumption of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Enrile's instant ruling, made after hearing an objection raised by lead prosecutor former SC Justice Serafin Cuevas, effectively shelves the testimony of PAL vice president for sales Enrique Javier for reason that it is not relevant or not alleged in the Article 3 of the complaint.

Not one of the Senator-judges objected to Enrile's ruling.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb. 20, 2012) - Amid calls from various sectors for the President and the Chief Justice to hold back verbal attacks against each other while the Corona impeachment trial is ongoing, President Aquino yesterday insisted even the President is entitled to his own opinion and cannot be gagged.

I think I am within my rights to express my opinion. I speak for a sizeable number of our people. That’s the essence of a democracy. Contending ideas should be threshed out in a marketplace of ideas,” he told Palace reporters in Baler, Aurora.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 16, 2012) - The petition of Chief Justice Renato Corona to stop his impeachment trial had to be raffled off for the second time after a Supreme Court (SC) Justice appointed by President Aquino declined to take charge of the case.

An insider yesterday told The Philippine Star that Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe does not want to be the ponente or member-in-charge of Corona’s case.

BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares sent separate summons to the Chief Justice, his wife Cristina, their daughter Ma. Carla and her husband Constantino Castillo III, to answer separate tax evasion inquiries.

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 7, 2012) - In a decision arrived at during a closed-door caucus called in the midst of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona yesterday, Senators acting as judges allowed the subpoena and presentation of Corona'a bank account records as requested by the prosecution.

The alleged supicious accounts are held by Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) and Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).

MANILA, Philippines (Feb 3, 2012) - Born in the United States to Bicolano immigrants, Filipino-American US Navy Commander Leopoldo Albea Jr. considers himself more of a Filipino than American and he is excited about his visit to the Philippines as the commander of one of the biggest US warships.

Albea, whose parents are originally from Polangui, Albay, is the captain of the USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) which is the US Navy’s latest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

The Wayne E. Meyer, along with its sister warship the USS Chafee, arrived last weekend for a port and goodwill visit. Both ships are scheduled to leave today and continue with their Asia-Pacific tour.

MANILA, Philippines (Jan 29, 2012) - Believing that the conclusion that Chief Justice Renato Corona amassed ill-gotten wealth shall surface as a matter of course, the prosecutors in the on-going impeachment trial of the chief magistrate say there is no need to ammend the complaint as suggested by some senators.

By the ruling of the impeachment court, prosecutors are barred from presenting evidence of Corona's ill-gotten wealth for reason that it is not properly alleged in the Article 2 of the complaint. However, the senate tribunal also ruled that evidence of properties and other assets not declared in Corona's Statement of Assets Liabilities and Networth (SALN) may be presented.

The prosecution submitted yesterday a 39-page document that contains the list of possible witnessesand documentary evidence that it likes to present during the impeachment trial. The witnesses listed reportedly include 5 justices of the Supreme Court and journalists.

MANILA, Philippines (Jan 26, 2012) – Despite persistent opposition of the defense on technicalities, Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares was able to present the tax records of Chief Justice Renato Corona and his wife, Cristina, at the resumption of the Corona impeachment trial yesterday.

The decision to allow Henares' testimony was arrived at yesterday morning in a closed door caucus of senators, acting as impeachment court judges, who allowed the prosecution to present and mark the evidence on properties Corona acquired while in government service. The senators, however, did not allow the presentation of evidence on Corona's alleged ill-gotten wealth mentioned in paragraph 2.4 of the Article 2 of the 8 Articles of Impeachment. The presentation of the tax records of the Corona children and in laws was also disallowed.

MANILA, Philippines (Jan 20, 2012) - Working on the premise that any asset that a government employee owns but not declared in his Statements of Assets Liabilities and Networth (SALN) is deemed ill-gotten, the prosecutors said that discrepancies in the SALNs submitted by Chief Justice Renato Corona for the period 2002 to 2010 are enough to convince the impeachment court to convict him.

Spokespersons for the prosecution said that through Corona’s SALNs and evidence of existence of undeclared properties owned by him, they would be able to prove that the Chief Justice has amassed ill-gotten wealth.

NAGA CITY (Jan 7, 2012) – On the 115th yearly commemoration of the 15 Martyrs of Bicol, Naga City’s chief executive and a top commander of the Philippine Army division in the region led the wreath laying rites at the “Plaza Quince Martires” in this city’s downtown district early morning of Wednesday (Jan. 4).

Former interior secretary Ronaldo Puno and a dozen other former and current officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) led by retired Director General Avelino Razon Jr. will be investigated for graft and technical malversation of public funds “for approving, receiving, and/or using or allowing the use of the amount of (P2,314,096.00) from the PNP confidential/intelligence fund for travel expense and allowance of delegates to the Interpol Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia.”

MANILA, Philippines (Jan 5, 2012) - Former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. disclosed yesterday that he is willing to testify against former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her Sandiganbayan trial in connection with the botched NBN -ZTE deal.

The Ombudsman has filed graft charges against Arroyo in connection with the aborted $329-million national broadband network (NBN) contract her administration awarded to Chinese firm ZTE Corp. in 2007.

NAGA CITY (Dec 14, 2011) - In the field of lawmakers that include Congressmen Edcel Lagman, a loyal Arroyo supporter, Dato Arroyo, former presidential son, and Rolando Andaya, Jr., former Budget secretary, 7 out of 16 Bicolano district representatives in the Lower House signed the resoluton to impeach Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Two of 3 Ako Bicol partylist representatives – Rodel Batocabe and Alfredo Garbin Jr. - also signed in, favoring the ousting of the Chief Justice.

In total, 9 Bicol lawmakers joined the 188 signatories to the Corona impeachment resolution.
