MANILA, Dec. 20, 2011—A Catholic bishop has urged the cancellation of pricey fireworks shows for Christmas and the New Year amid tragedy that struck Northern Mindanao provinces.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez made the call as number of fatalities from Typhoon Sendong rose to more than 900 as of Tuesday morning.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez made the call as number of fatalities from Typhoon Sendong rose to more than 900 as of Tuesday morning.

Iñiguez said the funds intended for firework shows can be donated instead to help the flood victims, especially in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City, the areas hardest hit by the typhoon.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said the former president should tell her side of the story because she has more knowledge on the issue.

The current Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office board claimed that Arroyo used its funds to gather allegiance at the time when she was facing ouster calls due to alleged corruption.
