  • MANILA, Sept. 24, 2010-A Catholic Church-backed poll watchdog is again serving as the citizen's arm of the Commission on Elections in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls on October 25.

    In a resolution dated Sept. 21, the commission en banc took notice of the extensive experience of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting as its best asset in becoming the citizen's arm for the sixth straight time.

  • MANILA, Sept. 24, 2010-Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD said he fully supports the campaign of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines against illegal gambling as he pledged to issue another pastoral statement for his diocese reiterating his commitment against the proliferation of the illegal numbers game.

    Interviewed recently by CBCPNews in Naga City, the 66-year old prelate said his stand against gambling has not changed and the CBCP has been very vocal against it.

  • NAGA City, Sept. 24, 2010-What used to be a small town practice of piety has now developed into a Marian devotion international in scope, according to Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legaspi.

    The devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia has grown exponentially over the past 300 years and has reached far distant shores, the prelate said.

  • MANILA, Sept. 14, 2010-Not just government officials but even some Catholic bishops are receiving payola from the illegal numbers game called jueteng.

    Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz admitted he is saddened with what is happening but these church officials are getting jueteng money as donations from the illegal gambling operators.

    "There are about 12 dioceses that we are looking into but we are most certain of the eight (dioceses that are getting jueteng money)," he said.

  • LONDON, SEPT. 17, 2010--Benedict XVI is underlining the need to base political decisions in ethical foundations and objective moral principles, without which democracy is threatened.

    Today in London, the Pope addressed representatives of civil society, the academic, cultural and entrepreneurial world, the diplomatic corps and religious leaders at Westminster Hall. The meeting took place on the second day of the Pontiff's four-day state visit to the United Kingdom.

  • NAGA City, Sept. 19, 2010-The Bikolanos' deep devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia is what makes the region's faithful different and distinct from other devotees.

    This was the impression shared by Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD in an interview with CBCPNews at the Archbishop's Chapel, a couple of hours before the traditional fluvial procession along the Bikol River yesterday.

    "(The devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia) is something different and very unique," he said.

  • MANILA, Sept. 7, 2010-An arch critic of Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo said he cannot wait to see the former president testify in the graft trial against one of her officials implicated on the botched multi-million dollar national broadband network (NBN) project.

    Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz said that Arroyo's testimony could pressure Romulo Neri, the National Economic and Development Authority director general during her term, to disclose what he really knows about the controversial project.

  • MANILA, Sept. 10, 2010-As Filipino Muslims mark the end of Ramadan, Catholic missionaries in Mindanao called for a "renewed friendship" Friday, urging both faith communities to serve humanity.

    Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo said he is hoping that this year's observance of Eid-ul-Fitr would spur not only Muslims but also Christians in working towards peace in the war-ravaged Mindanao region.

    The holiday of Eid-ul-Fitr marks not only the end of the fasting period of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, but also a time of forgiveness, and making amends.

  • MANILA, Sept. 8, 2010-The Peñafrancia Devotees Association in Metro Manila will join the whole of Bikolandia in celebrating the 300 years of devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, fondly called "Ina."

    Triduum of Novena and Masses at the St. Andrew of the Apostle Parish Church in Makati City will be held at every 6 p.m. from Sept. 9 to 11.

    On Sept. 12, the feast day, a fluvial procession along Pasig River will be held at 4 p.m. in keeping with the Peñafrancia Naga tradition.
