And this include the reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, which according to Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD, no amount of high-end technology can replace the intimacy of the confessional.
He said no less than the Vatican has issued a statement that confessions still have to be done in person.
“No confessions can be made through mobile phones with video call capabilities and electronic mail because absolution is given by confessor to the penitent in person,” the 66-year old prelate told CBCP Online Radio.
It will be recalled the Vatican, in a statement last month, disclosed that an iPhone application that aids in confession preparation is not a substitute for the personal dialogue between the priest and the penitent which is a requirement for the sacrament.
Jesuit Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican Press Office made the statement with the introduction of a new application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that earlier received an imprimatur from Bishop Kevin Rhodes of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Bastes also took the opportunity to call on the Catholic faithful to observe the Lenten Season with the appropriate atmosphere of denying one’s self with the usual comforts as he reminded everyone of the need to sacrifice “as the Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed for our redemption.”
He said it would be better for Manila-based Sorsoganons to stay in Manila rather than spend the Holy Week in beaches and reunions without regard for the Catholics’ faithful observance of the Paschal triduum.
The prelate said Filipino Catholics in countries where there’s no freedom to practice one’s faith can listen and view the CBCP website and join the traditional Visita Iglesia which will now be on its second year.
He added a perfect recitation of the Act of Contrition would provide them God’s forgiveness especially in countries where there are no Catholic chaplains to attend to their spiritual needs.
“As mentioned during Ash Wednesday, everyone is expected to repent and turn away from sin and be reminded that from dust we have come, to dust we will all return,” he said. (Melo M. Acuna)
