Republic Act 9262 of the Constitution clearly condemns any form of violence against women and children but what causes the continuous spate of violence and abuse on women? This Thursday night, GMA-7’s reality documentary show Rescue with Arnold Clavio takes a deeper look at violence perpetrated against women. In Barangay 128 Zone 10 in Tondo, Manila the group met two women with two different harrowing complaints of violence.
First is the housewife who complained of being beaten up by her own husband. When barangay officials tried to apprehend the husband, he refused and told barangay officials that theirs is just a common domestic dispute. Moments later, the officials received another call from the same housewife who complained earlier. But when officials got to the scene, the suspect had already escaped.
Afterwards, the barangay officials of Barangay 128 Zone 10 got another call—this time, from a woman who was complaining of attempted rape against her neighbour. But the neighbour, instead of evading arrest went straight to the barangay officials to claim his innocence.
With the number of cases still on the rise, what are the measures being taken by local officials to address violence against women? What actions have local authorities taken to assure women complainants that the individuals accused are taken into proper custody?
