Bill Creating San Miguel Bay Authority Filed
Naga City (June 4 2011) – A bill seeking the creation of an institution that will manage the San Miguel Bay was filed at the House of Representatives.
House Bill 4644 also known as an “Act creating the San Miguel Bay Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Authority” was filed by Camarines Sur congressmen Rolando Andaya Jr. of the first district, Dato Arroyo of the second district, Luis Villafuerte of the third district, Noli Fuentebella of the fourth district, together with Camarines Norte congressman Roy Panotes.
According to Calabanga municipal Mayor Evelyn Yu, the said move will solve the perennial problem of illegal fishing in San Miguel Bay and ensure its sustainability.
“Because it is an authority it’s advantageous to the local government units around the bay because they will have funds allocated annually,” Yu said.
On the other hand, San Miguel Bay will become a dead body of water if the government will not do anything to save it.
Almost 88 species fishes are found in San Miguel Bay including edible crustaceans and shell fishes.
Towns that surround San Miguel Bay include Mercedes in Camarines Norte and Sipocot, Cabusao, Calabanga, Siruma and Tinambac in Camarines Sur.
