Naga City (May 25, 2011 7:00 P.M.) - As of 7:00 P.M. tonight, Chedeng (international name: Songda) moves north-northwestwardly at 13 kph towards northern Philippine Sea, as it becomes a Category 3 typhoon (in the Simpson Typhoon Scale) with peak wind velocity of 195 kph and gustiness up to 240 kph.
The center of Typhoon Chedeng is located at 13.1º North Latitude 127.6º East Longitude. That points to 370 km East Southeast of Virac, Catanduanes,390 km East of Sorsogon City,420 km East of Legazpi City,455 km East Southeast of Iriga City, 480 km East Southeast of Metro Naga/CWC, or 520 km East Southeast of Daet Camarines Norte.
Even as Chedeng increases in strength, it tends to move farther away from the Bikol lands.
Typhoon shall be nearest the Bikol region tomorrow, Thursday. Its closest approach to Catanduanes shall be 215 km NE of Pandan (or 250 km NE of Virac) between 8:00 to 11:00 AM; to Camarines Sur, 270 km ENE of Caramoan (or 340 km ENE of Metro Naga) between 9:00 to 11:00 AM; to Legazpi City, 315 km ENE between 2:00 to 4:00 AM; and to Sorsogon City, 290 km ENE between 2:00 to 4:00 AM.
Chedeng is an average-sized tropical cyclone with a diameter of 665 kilometers (360 nautical miles). Typhoon Force Winds (118 km/hr or more) extend outward up to 65 kilometers (35 nautical miles) from the center and Tropical Storm Force Winds (62-117 kph) extend outward up to 215 kilometers (115 nautical miles).
If Chedeng maintains its current path, the typhoon may not even land in any part of the country and its full strength may not be felt in lands it threatens.
The typhoon may cause high 24-hr rainfall accumulation up 320 mm and sea waves up to 9.1 meter high near the center.
Tomorrow afternoon, Chedeng as a category 4 typhoon packing winds up to 220 kph shall start to move away from Catanduanes.
By Friday morning, Chedeng at near super typhoon strength travels more north- northwestwardly and shall be 275 km East of Palanan Bay, Isabela. Its wind velocity at this time shall be close to 230kph.
By Friday afternoon, the supertyphoon shall be 315 km East of Calayan Island (Balintang Channel) and will start its slow decay.
Chedeng should be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday as it moves towards Okinawa Island, Japan.
