MANILA--Restorative justice calls for a true paradigm shift where offenders and the offended could establish good relationships after the offenders have served time in prison. Puerto Princesa Bishop Pedro V. Arigo said the Catholic Church is not just concerned of the punishment meted on the offenders but to restore the broken relationship where the offenders and the offended will recognize each one as brothers and sisters, not only as human beings but as Christians.

46,487 indigents to receive Philhealth memberships

Sorsogon City--The provincial government of Sorsogon has started distributing PhilHealth cards to indigents and the underprivileged during the conduct of the Provincial Mobile Services Caravan (PMCS) in Irosin last week. Recipients of the PhilHealth card automatically make them members of the Sponsored Indigent Program (SIP) under the Medicare Para sa Masa Program (MPMP) of the governor, which entitles them to various health benefits. These include primary consultations with general physicians; laboratory services such as chest x-ray, complete blood count and urinalysis; and subsidized hospital services including surgery, room and board.

Albay engages in biofuel production

Legazpi City – The provincial government of Albay would engage in a jetropa production project in line with the government’s biofuel program, designed to cushion the price hike in fuel and energy brought by the global financial crunch. Albay Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Senator Miguel Zubiri and the University of the Philippines in Los Banos (UPLB) for a joint jetropa plantation project in the province.

MANILA--With the “alarming ” number of minors involved in pornography, advocacy for the passage of the anti-child pornography bill has increased. The Catholic bishops’ leadership said it is good that the legislators are finally doing something about child pornography, but the bill against it must be passed soonest.

Church urges probe into anti-mining activist slaying

MANILA--Catholic Church leaders have condemned the killing of an anti-mining activist and called for an investigation into its circumstances. Eliezer “Boy” Billanes, leader of the Anti-Development Aggression Coalition, was shot dead by unidentified men around 4:30 p.m. yesterday in Koranadal, South Cotabato. The murder has outraged Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez who said that the killing is a serious attack on human rights. “The right to life is a gift for everybody; no one has the right to take it. The wheel of justice is the proper venue for resolution of any case,” Gutierrez said.
