MANILA, Philippines (Dec 20, 2011) - Within days after the Department of Justice filed a case against retired Major General Jovito Palparan for the abduction of student-activists Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan in 2006, the Malolos Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 14 has ordered his arrest.

The arrest warrant was signed by Judge Hector Gonzales .

The retired military official is being accused as mastermind in the disappearance of the two University of Philippines students in 2006. A farmer named Manuel Merino was abducted along with the two students.

MANILA, Philippines (Dec 13, 2011) - Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago becomes the first from an Asian developing country to get elected as a  magistrate of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said today that Santiago garnered 79 votes to earn one of the seats in the ICC.

Santiago had said that she would resign as senator if she gets elected to sit as a judge in the ICC.

Santiago, however, clarified in a television interview that she did not have to immediately leave her seat in the Senate.

MANILA, Philippines – Pasay Regional Trial Court Branch 112 has approved the temporary detention of arrested ex-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the St. Luke’s Medical Center as she awaits trial for non-bailable offense of electoral sabotage.

 “For humanitarian reasons the motion (for hospital arrest) is granted,” said Judge Jesus Mupas of Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 112.

“The court has agreed to a temporary hospital arrest due to her health condition and for humanitarian reasons,” clerk of court Jose Pelicano told reporters after the court postponed to Friday a hearing on the motions filed by Arroyo’s lawyers.

Sen. Franklin Drilon said there shall be no let up in the ongoing investigations of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee into the alleged corruptions during the 9-year rule of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former first gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo.

A relatively obscure item in her resume' is that she started her career in the judiciary right here in Bikol. Between 1983 to 1986, Conchita Carpio-Morales was the trial court judge of Pili Camarines Sur. Here are some impressions of Conchita Carpio-Morales given by some local legal personalities.

Conchita Carpio-Morales, the newly appointed Ombudsman, was born on June 19, 1941 in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.

She earned both her Bachelor's degree in Economics and Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Philippines.

Right after her graduation from the UP College of Law in 1968, she started her law career in a private Manila law firm as Assistant Attorney.

In 1971, her former law professor and then Justice Secretary Vicente Abad Santos took her as a Special Assistant at the Department of Justice - thus starting an illustrious career in government service.

Arnulfo “Noli” Fuentebella, seeking the secession of the district's 10 municipalities in order to establish a new province, Eastern Camarines or Camarines Oriental. The reported reason for this effort is in order for these municipalities' development agenda be prioritized and pursued by the would-be new province.

What Tabora’s statement calls attention to really is Casureco II management’s defiance of the law and the law’s lack of teeth in biting it back. Granted that the power cooperative has filed a motion for reconsideration on Judge Clavecilla’s July 6 ruling, it remains bound nonetheless by that court order until a formal resolution is issued. And yet, Tabora et al persist in their defiance of that court order, of the law. They ought to be cited for contempt of court and appropriately penalized.
