MANILA, Nov. 3, 2011— Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad is calling for sobriety and restraint amid recent armed clashes in Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay.

Jumoad urged the Aquino government forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to restrain themselves from using force in Mindanao.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) Nov. 4, 2011 — The Philippine government and Muslim rebels agreed Thursday to continue peace talks despite recent clashes that killed 19 soldiers in a southern province, the chief government negotiator said.

As the two sides work toward ending decades of rebellion for Muslim self-rule, the rebels reaffirmed a commitment under a previous agreement to help the government fight kidnap gangs and other criminal groups, Marvic Leonen said in a statement after an informal meeting in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur...

MANILA, Philippines – While ruling out an all-out war with the the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), President Benigno C. Aquino III vowed Friday to give justice  to the 19 soldiers who were killed by MILF rebels in Basilan last Tuesday.

Aquino made the commitment as he condoled with the families and relatives of the slain soldiers on Friday.

“For all those who were responsible for the death of these soldiers, I warn you the government will not let this pass, we will hunt you down and give justice to the victims,” Aquino told reporters at the Libingan ng mga Bayani late Friday...
