MANILA, Nov. 29, 2011— An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has joined calls for the Chief Justice Renato Corona to inhibit himself from all cases involving former President Gloria Arroyo.

Fr. Edu Gariguez of the National Secretariat for Social Action said this is to remove doubts on the High Court’s impartiality in deciding cases involving Arroyo who was recently charged and arrested for electoral sabotage.

MANILA, Philippines (Nov 24, 2011) – The family President Benigno Aquino III's shall soon find themselves landless as the Supreme Court orders the distribution of the Cojuangco-owned 4,915.75-hectare Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac to over 6,000 farmer workers-beneficiaries of the sugar estate.

The SC, in the 56-page ruling obtained by The Star last night, recalled and set aside the option granted to the farmers to remain as stockholders of Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI).

MANILA, Philippines (Nov 5, 2011) - Nine former officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) will spend 6 to 10 years in jail after the Sandiganbayan convicted them of graft in connection with the ghost purchase of P38.2-million worth of combat uniforms and equipment in 1992.

Among those convicted of graft were former PNP logistics command (LogCom) chief Director Everlino Nartatez, then service store system administrator, Senior Superintendent Alejandro Espiritu Jr., former Logcom procurement center chief, Superintendent Obedio Espena, and former chief of the directorate for materials Superintendent Alejandro Camello.

NAGA CITY (Oct 24, 2011) - A construction firm implementing a drainage project in this city could be facing charges of negligence after two of its workers died and two others were injured when an 8-meter deep excavation at a project site caved in and buried the victims.

The project's contractor, 4GM Construction firm based in Antipolo City, has not made a public statement on the tragedy. But sources from the city hall say the construction company has administrative and civil liabilities and the city government itself may file the appropriate charges...

The military is watching. Armed Forces public affairs chief Lt. Col. Arnulfo Burgos said they did not expect the Sandiganbayan to favor the deal with Garcia.
