GMA News and Public Affairs proves yet again that it is the viewers’ preferred news source especially during significant events. This after GMA News’ special coverage of the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III topped the overall television household ratings last July 28 (based on overnight data) according to the industry’s leading ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

GMA-7’s special live coverage dubbed “SONA 2014,” anchored by multi-awarded GMA News pillars Mel Tiangco and Mike Enriquez, outscored ABS-CBN in National Urban TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM), Urban Luzon, and Mega Manila ratings.

“SONA 2014” delivered an average household rating of 11.3 percent in NUTAM compared to ABS-CBN’s “Ulat sa Bayan State of the Nation Address 2014,” which only managed 10.3 percent. It was also clearly the preferred coverage in Urban Luzon with an average household rating of 12.7 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 8.3 percent. The Kapuso Network’s special coverage posted an even bigger lead in its bailiwick Mega Manila with 12.9 percent, 5.6 points ahead of ABS-CBN’s 7.3 percent.

Meanwhile, “SONA ni PNoy,” GMA News TV’s special coverage, likewise ruled over TV5’s “SONA 2014 PNoy sa Daang Matuwid” in NUTAM, Urban Luzon, and Mega Manila. “SONA ni Pnoy” was bannered by Peabody awardee and four-time Reader’s Digest Most Trusted News Presenter Jessica Soho.

News TV’s “SONA ni Pnoy” posted an average household rating of 2.8 percent in NUTAM, higher than the 2.0 percent showing of TV5’s “SONA 2014 PNoy sa Daang Matuwid.” In Urban Luzon, News TV’s special coverage posted 3.2 percent, still ahead of TV5’s 1.8 percent. It also led over TV5 in Mega Manila with 3.8 percent versus the latter’s 1.9 percent.

GMA News’ comprehensive coverage also extended online via www.gmanews.tv and other social media platforms like YouScoop, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. GMA News Online also created a microsite where the public openly rated the performance of PNoy.

Simultaneously, live reports in and out of Congress were also heard on GMA’s flagship AM radio station dzBB 594 kHz Super Radyo. Listeners also sent in their views and comments via the station’s Twitter account @dzbb, and were read on the air.
