GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) established a strong start in the key areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila as it maintained dominance over rival networks in January, according to the industry’s leading ratings provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Furthermore, GMA consistently beat competition across all dayparts - morning, afternoon, and evening, which includes the hotly contested primetime slot in the said areas.

It is worthy to note that Urban Luzon’s population share in urban TV household Philippines increased to 77 percent from 2013’s 76 percent, while Mega Manila’s population share similarly grew to 60 percent from the previous year's 59 percent.

For the period January 1 to 31 (January 26 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA registered a 35.5 percent average total day audience share in Urban Luzon, outscoring ABS-CBN’s 32.1 percent by 3.4 points and TV5’s 11.2 percent by 24.3 points.

More Kapuso programs also entered the list of top-performing shows in Urban Luzon with multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) leading the other 15 GMA shows in the top 30 list. Joining KMJS in the top 10 were weekend top-raters Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento and Celebrity Bluff, and weekly drama anthology Magpakailanman.

The list also includes GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras, Kapuso Primetime Cinema, Saturday night comedy Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, hard-hitting news and public affairs program Imbestigador, and weeknight telefantasya Adarna.

Completing the roster for Urban Luzon are the country’s longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga, Kapuso Movie Night, newly launched primetime dramas Carmela and Rhodora X, the longest running gag show on Philippine TV Bubble Gang, weekend game show Picture Picture, and popular infotainment program Kap’s Amazing Stories.

Likewise, the Kapuso Network scored top ratings in its bailiwick Mega Manila with a 36.4 percent average total day audience share, higher than ABS-CBN’s 29.4 percent by 7 points, and TV5’s 12.2 percent by 24.2 points.

Majority of the top programs for Mega Manila belonged to GMA with Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and Celebrity Bluff getting the top two slots.

Magpakailanman, Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento, 24 Oras, Kapuso Primetime Cinema, Imbestigador, Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, Adarna, Kapuso Movie Night, Eat Bulaga, and Carmela also registered strong ratings in Mega Manila.

Not to be left behind are Bubble Gang, Rhodora X, Picture Picture, Kap’s Amazing Stories, and the primetime Koreanovela 100-Year Legacy.

GMA and TV5 subscribe to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that reportedly subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement gathers data based on a sample size of 1,190 homes as compared to Kantar Media's 770 homes. Meanwhile, Nielsen has a nationwide urban sample size of 2,000 homes, which is statistically higher than Kantar's sample size of 1,370.
