A century and a half ago this Saturday, Andres Bonifacio was born in Tondo. Born to a simple family, murdered by men he considered as brothers, Andres lived a short life. But he left behind a legacy of love of country and uprightness that Filipinos still idealize 150 years later.
GMA brings Andres’ story to life in its groundbreaking historical mini-series Katipunan.
In this Saturday’s episode of Katipunan (entitled: Karsel or The Torture Chambers), the revolutionaries attack Manila and Cavite . Spanish forces respond by placing Manila and seven provinces under martial law ... and by setting up torture chambers. Behind thick adobe walls, the guardia civil carry out methods of torture they perfected in other colonies.
Ilustrados who refused to support the Katipunan find themselves exactly where they feared they would be: sharing prison cells with Katipuneros. Andres Bonifacio included the names of the rich and reluctant in the list of Katipunan supporters. This was the Supremo’s wily way of exacting vengeance on those who wanted Spanish forces to remain in the Philippines .
Sebastian and Pacquing are among those arrested. Father Villalon immediately recognizes Pacquing and singles him out for more cruel forms of torture.
After days of walking, battling danger and hunger, Oriang is finally reunited with Andres Bonifacio. Oriang’s presence strengthens Andres as the revolution ground on.
One early morning, with guns to their head, Sebastian and Pacquing and a handful others are made to dig their own graves.
Katipunan’s cast is led by Sid Lucero as Andres and Glaiza de Castro as Oriang. Benjamin Alves stars as Sebastian while Dominic Roco plays Pacquing. Roi Vinzon plays the role of the ruthless Padre Villalon while Nico Antonio stars as Emilio Aguinaldo.
Created by Program Manager Jaileen Jimeno and written by Ian Victoriano, the historical docudrama is directed by King Marc Baco. Production work is led by Program Manager Nowell Cuanang and Executive Producer Jayson Santos. It is being filmed using Sony Cinemaalta F3 cameras provided by Solid Video. CMB Film Services Inc. provided lenses and other high-end equipment. Post production and color grading was done by Quantum Films.
Two major characters in the series will die in Katipunan’s sixth episode. Find out who they are on the Supremo's 150th birth anniversary -- Saturday, 10:15 PM on GMA 7.
