Traveling along Cebu ’s South Road Properties, one can’t help but notice a unique structure featuring several walls of different heights mounted in an elevated portion of SM Seaside Complex.
Its Cebu ’s newest chapel dedicated to San Pedro Calungsod, the 1st Visayan Saint. Originally intended for Mother Mary, SM agreed to requests to dedicate the chapel to the 16-year-old Calungsod, whom many believed hailed from a southern town in Cebu .
The dedication took place a day before the November 30, 2012 National Thanksgiving Mass in Cebu .
With its modern type architecture, the chapel provides a different feel in attending Sunday mass. Designed by US-based architect Carlos Arnaiz, it is considered as the most modern Church of Cebu .
It sits on an elevated 5,001-square meter lot and can accommodate close to a thousand followers.
Homage to Cebu ’s dynamic spirit, the Chapel is also known as “Church of 100 Walls” due to the hundred walls of different height and width that cover the entire structure. Its design is “contemporary, futuristic & contextual”.
According to the Church’s architect, the walls (which symbolize the faithful) come together to form a kind of congregation.
One of the chapel’s attractions is its children room, located at the rear portion. Here, parents can attend to their noisy kids and still see and hear the mass.
