DAET, Camarines Norte, August 5, 2013—Being a grandparent is a vocation too.
The important role that grandparents fulfill in the transmission of the Catholic faith to the younger generation was highlighted in the launching of the Catholic Grandparents Association of the Philippines in Daet recently.
Around 156 delegates from eight dioceses participated in the launching of the Association at Bagasbas Lighthouse Hotel, Daet, Camarines Norte from July 25-27.
The launching signals the beginning of the organization not only in the country but also in Asia. The Association originated in Ireland with Mrs. Catherine Wiley as the foundress.
As a fruit of the Year of Faith, the launching of the Catholic Grandparents Association also offered a time of reflection and rediscovery of the gift and vocation of being grandparents.
In the said gathering, Mrs. Wiley explained the noble vocation of grandparents, their role in transmitting the faith and their impact in today’s modern society.
Fr. Melvin Castro, the CBCP Executive Secretary of the Commission on Family and Life also presented a reflection talk on the obstacles of transmitting faith in the Philippine context.
The gathering was initiated by Bishop Gilbert Garcera of Daet, who met Mrs. Catherine Wiley in Milan, Italy during the World Meeting of Families in 2012. Both were speakers during the said world event.
The eight dioceses represented are the Archdiocese of Lipa, Dioceses of Antipolo, Tarlac, Caloocan, Masbate, Sorsogon, Legazpi and Daet. (CBCPNews)
