In observance of the Cancer in Children Awareness month, GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), in partnership with Tahan-Tahanan, conducted a special activity for pediatric cancer patients dubbed “Isang Tuwa at Isang Pag-Asa” at the East Avenue Medical Center last April 20.

The day-long event, attended by at least 70 children sponsored by the two organizations, aimed to provide an enjoyable atmosphere for the patients through various activities that remind them of the simple joys of childhood.

The children engaged in an art workshop and a storytelling session, and played games, among other activities lined-up for the day.

“Play is second nature to children. It is therefore important to provide kids with cancer every opportunity to take their minds of their illness even for just a short while,” shared Ms. Mel Tiangco, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of GMAKF.

The parents and guardians, on the other hand, learned important measures in taking care of their children’s nutrition and hygiene from a lecture conducted by Dr. Ma. Victoria Abesamis, Medical Chief of the East Avenue Medical Center Tumor Clinic, and consultant of Tahan-Tahanan, a halfway home for cancer-stricken children.

Dr. Abesamis also explained the usual physical and emotional struggles that children with the life-changing disease go through, and how important it is that they are allowed to play and stay connected with their fellow cancer patients.

“There is always room for these kinds of activities not just to educate but to provide supportive care to the children and their families. Aside from boosting their confidence, this will make them feel that they’re not alone in their struggles,” she mused.

Yearly, the GMAKF holds special activities for children with cancer in synergy with partners in its Give A Gift: Cancer Kids project, a program that sponsors chemotherapy treatment and wellness activities for indigent patients.  For this year, GMAKF extended its reach to the children of Tahan-Tahanan of East Avenue Medical Center Tumor Clinic.

Through these activities, GMAKF will continue to provide not just medical assistance, but also emotional support to these kids until they find themselves on the road to recovery. (GMA Network)
