LEGAZPI CITY--The City Health Office of Legazpi is pursuing a massive blood letting activity to encourage voluntary donors from the 70 villages. According to this city’s Health Promotion Division, the residents are very supportive of this endeavor.
It said that it had just conducted a blood letting activity at Barangay Bigaa, this city Friday morning where a total of 46 people volunteered for blood screening.
The division said there were 26 of them who qualified for blood donation and the blood bags were sent directly to the regional blood bank in Daraga, Albay.
The city health office is pushing for regular blood letting activities across the locality and encouraged the barangay captains to support the project.
With the participation and support of the barangay captains, the city health has assured an ample flow of blood supply for transfusion to emergency patients. Aside from this, the office would ensure an “affordable” and sustainable supply of blood instead of “paid” donors.
In recognition of their support, the city health is contemplating on giving “Sandugo Awards” to at least three barangays but the names of these villages have not yet been revealed as of this writing.
The city health deems barangay based-blood donation activities very productive as barangay officials personally know their residents and they themselves can encourage possible donors who are not risk takers such as those engaged in illicit sex, alcoholism and other health-risky activities. (PNA)
