Maybe, in some corner of the Internet, there are already fans lamenting and preparing the corresponding boycott. Hardly any information about Indiana Jones 5 has emerged , but the Daily Mail echoes some rumors that would point to a major change of direction in the saga; one that will not be well received by the same people who complained about Rey’s role in Star Wars , the female reboot of Ghostbusters or, more recently, the fact that a woman is going to snatch 007 from James Bond in No time to Die , which opens on October 1 . According to these rumors, the prominence in future installments of Indiana Jones it’s going to be drastically modified.
Anonymous sources suggest that the producer Kathleen Kennedy wants to make “big and daring” changes within the saga, and these would happen because the leading role belonged beyond Indiana Jones 5 to Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The creator and protagonist of Fleabag (who was also involved as a scriptwriter in the aforementioned No Time to Die ) is one of the great signings of this fifth installment directed by James Mangold replacing the historical Steven Spielberg , and although hardly anything is known about her character (The same report hints that she would play the “Indiana Jones assistant”) it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm want her to become a future protagonist.
In this way, Waller-Bridge would henceforth play the “female version of the fictional archeology professor . ” While another source points out that there are those who question this decision within the industry, the move that Harrison Ford gave up the limelight makes a lot of sense. It is not only that Ford will be 80 years old when Indiana Jones 5 hits theaters and, therefore, it is difficult to imagine him back in another installment if it works: it is also that it would not be the first time that the saga attempts a succession . Or have we already forgotten about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ?
Yes, it is possible that we have indeed forgotten about her, but if we refresh our memory it is easy to remember how the script timidly established that Mutt Williams ( Shia Labeouf ) could henceforth become the protagonist of the saga, thanks to being the son of Dr. Jones and a last scene in front of the hat that, in reality, seemed to question whether the mythical archaeologist could be replaced at some point.
In fact there is no trace of Labeouf in Indiana Jones 5 , so we can be sure that the studio was not satisfied with the experience of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (impression highly shared by most of the public, actually) .
Whether or not it is true about Waller-Bridge, it does seem that we should expect her to be the co-star of Indiana Jones 5 , assuming the main addition to the cast alongside Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas and Boyd Holbrook . The film has a release on July 29, 2022 .
