P-Noy signs into law bill postponing ARMM poll
MANILA, Philippines - Celebratin his first anniversary in office, President Benigno Aquino III today signed into law the bill that seeks postponement of the elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) originally slated for August 8 this year.
Leaders of both the upper and lower house of Philippine Congress, stood witnesses as the president signed the ARMM election postponement bill at the Rizal Hall in Malacañang.
Opposed by several quarters over apprehension that President Aquino shall have "blanket authority" to appoint officers-in-charge in the ARMM for the next two years, both chambers of Congress passed the bill at the prodding of Malacañang who argued that postponing the August 8 election in the autonomous region will give the national government more time to implement reforms in its electoral system.
Elections in the region are usually marred by violence and intimidations from armed groups identified with local politicians. With the ARMM elections now synchronizing with the 2013 midterm elections, the Aquino administration has two years to set up long-term mechanisms to attain peaceful and credible elections in the ARMM.
