He is tagged “Dugong Kampeon” for his name speaks of a lineage of famous Filipino boxers. The tradition of family boxing was stirred by his grandfather Carl Peñalosa, who once held the Philippine Lightweight Champion title, while his father Dodie Boy Peñalosa, Sr. was a two-time World Division Champion. His uncle Gerry Peñalosa, another boxing hero in the annals of this combat sport, won twice as World Champion prior to retiring.
Now, all eyes are set on the younger fighter – Dodie Boy Peñalosa, Jr. – as the future of Philippine boxing faces Kong Kiatpracha Gym of Thailand this Saturday, August 6, at the Mandaue Sports Complex in Cebu .
Airing on August 7, Sunday, via GMA-7’s sports TV special “LABAN NG LAHI: DUGONG KAMPEON”, the main event features the 21-year-old Dodie Boy Jr. against 34-year-old Kong Kiatpracha Gym in an 8-round bout.
The Cebu-grown fighter holds a professional record of 5 wins -- all via Knock-outs and no losses while his Thai opponent now has a record of 5 wins-8 losses-1 draw.
Before turning professional last year, Dodie Boy Jr. was a 2-time National Champion with a record of 27 wins and no losses and would have given him a shot at Olympic Gold had he not left the amateur ranks.
On Sunday, “LABAN NG LAHI: DUGONG KAMPEON” will also feature former WBC Light Flyweight Champion Rodel Mayol.
