MANILA, May 21, 2012— A Catholic bishop called on the senators to treat Chief Justice Renato Corona with respect when he testified at his own impeachment trial.
Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said Corona is still innocent until proven guilty and that the senator-judges can get the truth and be respectful of the chief justice at the same time.
“I wish him well and I hope and pray that he will not be disrespected by his fellow civil servants,” Arguelles said. “He should be respected by his position.”
Corona is expected to face the impeachment court on Tuesday and explain, among others, some $10 million in bank accounts, which he reportedly owns but never declared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net worth (SALN).
Archbishop Arguelles also expressed belief that Corona will tell the truth when he faces the senator-judges.
“I believe that he will speak the truth (in the impeachment court),” said Arguelles. [CBCPNews]
