UNEP-backed school for special kids marks 6th anniversary

IRIGA CITY ---  The Bicol Development and Learning Center Foundation Inc., the community extension arm of the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) catering to children with learning and physical disabilities, marked its sixth anniversary last month with a simple but meaningful activities.

PNP Bikol hires 500 policemen this year

LEGAZPI CITY April 8 (PNA) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office here announced yesterday that they are now accepting applications for the recruitment of 500 new policemen this year. Chief Supt. Paterno Bangui, Bikol police regional director, said the recruitment was in line with government's job generation program to provide employment in the countryside.

Balikatan Humanitarian Mission Kicks Off

Sorsogon Province (7 April) -- The RP-US Balikatan humanitarian mission formally opened here April 1 in a simple ceremony at Barangay Guruyan in Juban town, this province. Barangay Guruyan is one of the identified recipient barangays of the joint military forces' engineering and medical missions. Barangay Patag in Irosin, also among the identified priority areas, will receive health assistance, school buildings and road component projects.

Rapu-Rapu fishkill investigated by Ateneo, media

RAPU-RAPU, ALBAY (Nov. 14) – Dr. Emelina Regis of Ateneo de Naga University's Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research (INECAR), along with three of the institute's staff went to Rapu-Rapu island in Albay to conduct preliminary investigations into the reported fishkill from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2.

Yap urges CSSAC graduates: Be entrepreneurs

Military, NPA trade barbs over killing of Sorsogon human rights activist

SORSOGON CITY, April 3 (PNA) – The Philippine Army (PA) conducting anti-insurgency activities in Sorsogon, a highly communist rebel-infested province southeast of Luzon, has accused the New People’s Army (NPA) of killing a 37-year-old widow human rights activist here. The Celso Minguez Command (CMC), the local unit of the NPA operating in the area, on the other hand, said in press statement that the death squad of the PA was behind the assassination.

Sorsogon execs welcome Balikatan

JUBAN, Sorsogon, April 2 (PNA) – Local officials here on Thursday spread the red carpet for the formal opening of the Balikatan exercises in Sorsogon province under the RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). Opening ceremonies were held in Barangay Guruyan, an interior village of this fifth class municipality highly infested by 40-year old communist insurgency that seeks to topple the government and establish a Marxist-Leninist state.
