I paid visit to Mr. Llagas, there I knew that the problem was there was no one to turn to, no one to hold accountable for all the ads. My question for myself was, if there were no people accountable, how did all these ads make it to the airwaves?! There's the rub.

The many times we were with the media in our advocacy works were always tinted and hinted with political malice. There has always been that kind intimation for political leaning-and many times they were not intimations, they were blatant propaganda. One commentator would always make fun of the situation and would tell the reporter interviewing me, pakisabi ngantig ki Dato, buwisit siya ha.

The power of the media is immense and vast, that is has also the capacity to take away from us proper sensibilities. This is the danger of public perception. When Joseph Estrada was ousted by the so-called second EDSA People Power, Joseph Spaeth of Time magazine predicted that ousting a leader would be a vice in the Philippines. Now it is indeed a vice, and the media is greatly involved in its success.

PART 2 of 5. This is a five-part lecture delivered on 28 January 2010 on the occasion of the Ateneo de Naga University's Philosophy Week: Philosophy and Philippine Politics.

In the discussion of media corruption, there are two words necessitating an etymological and contextual scrutinies-first, the term media, and the second, corruption. Such looking up of the origins of these two apellations may give us a deconstructed and definitive clarity of what the fusion of the two, media and corruption, or media corruption, is all about.

MY FATHER is a constant cynic when it comes to personnel. It hurts me, because primarily, I work with and for media-although indirectly. I teach Media Studies in a university.

FACEBOOK HAS BEEN EATING UP many people's schedules lately. Unlike Friendster which had gone boring and stale as an old loaf of bread, Facebook or FB has gotten people's attention including the bosses and the senior citizens in such large scale that I think every computer in the world has in its cache remnants of logging in to and out of FB. In my experience, this didn't spare the Filipino literary writers.

THE PROPONENTS of the Libmanan -Cabusao Dam Project (now Cabusao-Sipocot-Lupi-Libmanan or Casilli Dam Project) must have learned out of the tragedies plaguing the northern parts of the country today. Pangasinan is still deep in flood waters. Residents of Botolan, Zambales had seen their cemetery demolished by raging waters that disinterred coffins and corpses.

UYA AN RAWITDAWIT na binasa sa 'Haliya nin Banwaan: Protesta sa Pagratak kan National Artist Awards':

Haliya! Haliya sa itaas!

Haliya! Haliya sa ibaba!

Madiklom! Madiklom!

Hilnga an kalangitan, abo an panganoron.

Amakan an baga, ibudbod an arawa,

PERHAPS, I'M JUST LUCKY to have a munchkin for nephew. Let's say it makes everything different. It makes leaving in the morning a little funnier than when we were just three adults in the house. Phone calls are always interrupted by reminders of the much awaited úbong (guess what it means). Arrival in the evening are welcomed with a fanfare of jubilation. That's why the úbong should never, never ever be forgotten; a child will appreciate anything from three pieces of chocolate krinkles to a twenty-peso worth plastic toy to a rubber octopus filled with water. The úbong defines what the family will experience on the night it was given. My sister-my nephew's mom-abhors any úbong that is musical by nature. It means same music-or, yes, noise-playing over and over again until late midnight, until the boy sleeps, tired and exhausted. His sleep would be frequented with dreams and sleep-talking about playtime, other children, toys, and animated movies.

THE CLOUDS ARE GREY for Filipino artists today. The air, dry for us, cannot be breathed for sustenance of life. I refer, of course, to the death of dignity and honor of the Order of the National Artists in our country. Interestingly, at the time of writing, I am in Manila waiting for the road to Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, to be opened again for traffic. Bayombong is the birth place of one of the greatest influences of Philippine literature, National Artist for Literature Dr. Edith Tiempo, and she will be paid tribute there.

LAST WEEK, THIS PAPER featured four articles on the Church’s rejection of the secular celebrations, military parade, and other civic activities during the Peñafrancia week. Take note that I used ‘week’ instead of the ecclesiastical term ‘novena’ which is a little more than a week.
