Camp Elias Angeles, Pili, Camarines Sur (1 June) -- Family members of the soldiers who were killed and wounded in an ambush staged by NPA rebels in Camarines Sur have received cash assistance amounting to P1.45 million from Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her visit in 9ID Army headquarters today.

Five soldiers were killed while four were wounded in a series of ambuscades staged by the NPA rebels in Presentacion town, Camarines Sur last Saturday, May 29.

Legazpi City (29 April) -- Member-consumers of the Albay Electric Cooperative (ALECO) expressed a sigh of relief after the local electric cooperative was successful in getting a bilateral agreement with Aboitiz Power Renewable's Inc. to supply cheap electricity in the province.

ALECO has recently entered into an agreement with Aboitiz, an independent power provider (IPP), for the latter to provide the cooperative with 40 percent of its electricity requirements.

Legazpi City (5 April) -- Albay Gov. Joey Salceda was dismayed over the decision of the organizers of Binibining Pilipinas Universe replacing Ms. Venus Raj, this year's Miss Binibining Pilipinas Universe, with a second rank winner.

Salceda said he would ask the organizers why Miss Diane Samar Necio, the 1st runner up, did not automatically take the place of Raj.

Legazpi City (24 April) -- A joint investigating team composed of technical personnel from the Bikol regional offices of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has investigated the death of two persons in Sitio Gintong Araw, Barangay Panique in Aroroy, Masbate.

Tacloban City (April 18) -- This Saturday morning came with a surprising but very much welcomed news that Swiss Andreas Notter, one of the two remaining International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) members being held captive by the Abu Sayyaf, was recovered by policemen in a remote area of Indanan town, Sulu province.

The Philippine government welcomed the release of Andreas Notter of Switzerland and expressed hope that the remaining hostage would soon be freed as well.

Legazpi City --Environment activists rescued what they believe might be the smallest living offspring of the world’s biggest fish— a whaleshark (rhincodon typus) the size of a forearm.

The World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature said maritime officials, along with the environment activists in Pilar, Sorsogon, a town in the eastern Philippines, rescued the 15 inch–long newborn whale shark last week and released it in deep waters.

Masbate CITY--If the murder of Vice Mayor Antonino de Jesus of Milagros town here is any gauge, then there’s reason to fear that the 2010 elections in this province could become the hottest and bloodiest in the annals of the province.

The grim scenario was underscored by no less than Bishop Joel Z. Baylon in his “open letter” to all elected officials of the province, municipalities and barangays.

Legazpi City--The 15-member training staff of the Police Regional Mobile Group (PRMG) here was relieved by Bicol police regional director Chief Sup’t. Paterno P. Bangui to give way to an impartial investigation on the hazing allegedly committed by the training officers against newly recruited police scout trainees triggered by video expose sent to the Napolcom regional office.

Also relieved of his duties as PRMG group commander was Sr. Sup’t. Josel Q. Regondola who was temporarily replaced by Senior Sup’t. Eliciar Bron during the duration of the probe.

Sorsogon City--The provincial government of Sorsogon has started distributing PhilHealth cards to indigents and the underprivileged during the conduct of the Provincial Mobile Services Caravan (PMCS) in Irosin last week.
