LEGAZPI CITY, June 17 -- Bicol Regional Development Council (RDC) chairman and Albay Governor Joey S. Salceda assailed the decision to raise the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) toll fees which, he said, is tantamount to curtailment of trade and freedom to travel.

"Being a regular user of the SLEX, the 250% toll hike cannot be justified by the physical improvements we feel or likely to see, a far cry, compared to the dramatic changes in NLEX (North Luzon Expressway)," Salceda said.

LEGAZPI CITY, June 2  - Prices of agricultural products especially vegetables in Bikol region have remained stable despite the El Niño, according to the Bureau of Agriculture and Statistics (BAS).

"Farmers in the region were able to cope with the effect of El Niño and the supplies of vegetables have been sustained since January this year," Cathy Subido, BAS chief said.

LEGAZPI CITY, April 21  - "Mayon Volcano is still unsafe for mountaineers and human activity within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone remain is also prohibited," Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta told the public.

He warned mountaineers and tour guides that climbing Mayon in not safe until now because the volcano is still emitting gases and lava. "Although the lava and gases emission are minimal still it is dangerous to human," he said.

LEGAZPI CITY, Apr.15--The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Bikol is urging Bikolanos to ensure the recovery and continued protection of the environment by signing up for the 10 million movement (10MM).

EMB Bicol regional director Gilbert Gonzales said the 10MM was part of the campaign to gather 10 million commitments for the environment from all over the country.

"Under the movement, every Filipino is encouraged to commit to an environment-friendly act, which can be as simple as turning off the lights and all electrical appliances when not in use," he said.

LEGAZPI CITY, April 7  - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is set to release the new design of the Philippine monetary bills and coins by the end of 2010 and Mayon Volcano will be included in the new design of the bills.

Marlyn Paje, acting deputy director of BSP branch here, said that this is in accordance with the New Central Bank Act or Republic Act 7653 giving the Central Bank Monetary Board, with the approval of the Philippine President, the power to prescribe denominations, dimensions, designs and inscriptions and other characteristics of notes issued by the BSP.

SORSOGON CITY, March 23 --For more than three years now, shellfish enthusiasts who have avoided different kinds of shellfish particularly green mussel (locally known as tahong) harvested from Sorsogon Bay, now have a reason to party following release of laboratory results that the bay is finally free from the deadly red tide toxin.

Latest laboratory results of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) say shellfish collected at Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon City, Sorsogon province, is now free from the toxic red tide organism.

LEGAZPI CITY, March 18  - The Albay Council on Reproductive Tract Infection Control (ACRTIC) otherwise known as Albay AIDS Council is determined to pursue its campaign to fight the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and HIV here.

The council is also set to launch the distribution of free condom in various entertainment establishments. It has urged operators or owners of night establishments to make condom available and accessible.

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 26  - Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Dionisio Santiago urged all local officials to help fight the proliferation of illegal drugs in the Bikol region.

In a forum on Drug Abuse, Prevention and Education Community Enforcement held here Friday, Santiago appealed to barangay officials and city/ municipal anti-drug coordinating councils to strengthen their efforts in order to make the whole Bicol region free from illegal drugs.

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 24  - Mayor Gerome Alcantara of Donsol, Sorsogon has appealed for presidential intervention to stop the rampant illegal trawling within the territorial water jurisdiction of this whale shark capital as well as in Masbate area.

Alcantara said that illegal trawling within the area continues to operate despite several attempts made by the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Navy. "I am just wondering why they operate within the territories of Donsol and in Masbate but up to now, no single apprehension has been made by the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard."

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 17  - An early election in Masbate province is very unlikely, this according to the Commission on Election (Comelec) Bikol regional office.

Comelec Bikol regional director Zacariaz Zaragoza said on Wednesday that holding an election in Masbate ahead of the May 10 general election will not materialize without legal basis.

"The law provides that general election is on May 10, this means that holding an election ahead is illegal unless the Philippine Congress will enact another law," Zaragoza said.

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 10  - Land Transportation Office (LTO) Bicol regional director Ramon Roco is pushing for the inclusion of driving and traffic lessons in the curriculum specifically in elementary level.

"This is in order for our children to learn about the right traffic rules and policy at the early stage," director Roco said.

He explained that traffic accident in the country continues to occur due to undisciplined drivers despite training and orientation given by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 5 -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan has approved implementation of the P780-million project on the construction of seven evacuation centers in the province of Albay under the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The project which will cover the seven two-storey evacuation centers with 15 rooms per storey will cost about P60 million each.

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 15 - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Bikol has ordered the suspension to travel of small sea vessels including wooden hull and outriggered boats, following the gale warning issued by Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) that the prevailing northeast winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour are expected to trigger rough to very rough seas with waves reaching as high as five meters.

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 7 - The provincial government of Albay has released the initial assistance to the remaining evacuees from Barangay Anoling, Camalig town amounting to P3 million for the construction of their core shelters.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda announced Thursday that the remaining 258 families from Barangay Anoling can start building their core shelters (houses) in the lots already given to them by the provincial government of Albay inside the FVR resettlement site.

LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 28- The provincial government of Albay has issued a strict policy banning all types of firecrackers inside the evacuation centers specially during the New Year celebration.

Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) personnel conducted a routine inspection in all evacuation centers on Monday to enforce the policy issued by Albay Governor Joey Salceda.

Aside from banning the selling of all types of fire crackers, the BFP has warned the evacuees not to cook inside the classrooms.

LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 22- The Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed the allocation of P6 million for medicines and portable toilets for distribution in all evacuation centers in Albay province.

The DOH prompted to provide additional assistance to the province after Albay governor Joey Salceda issued a strict policy to ensure clean sanitary facilities at the evacuation centers.

As of 12:00 noon Tuesday, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) recorded at total of 45,366 persons evacuated or 9,441 families.
