MANILA, Philippines - The looming victory of local and national candidates who supported the Reproductive Health (RH) law only showed there is no Catholic vote, the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) said yesterday.
“The victory of the pro-RH candidates in the recently concluded elections is an affirmation that leaders of the Roman Catholic Church cannot dictate the results of the elections,” PLCPD executive director Rom Dongeto said.
“There is no Catholic vote and no black propaganda of the church can steal victory from candidates who advocate reproductive health,” he added.
PLCPD said data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) partial tally showed 94 percent of more than a hundred pro-RH reelectionists are seen winning in their respective districts and party-list system.
NAGA CITY, Philippines – The widow of former interior secretary Jesse Robredo wins by a landslide in the third district of Camarines Sur’s congressional race.
Actor Aga Muhlach, whose congressional bid in the fourth district of the province had hit a snag amid complaints he and his wife Charlene lack the required residency, also posted an early lead.
Leni Robredo got 111,414 votes or 80,181 votes over the 31,233 votes of Nelly Villafuerte with at least 66.26 percent of the votes counted.
“This only shows that vote-buying has no effect in the election,” said Robredo, who filed a disqualification case against her opponent last Thursday for vote-buying.
NAGA City -- Suspected private armed group members are facing charges of illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and bladed weapons and violation of the Comelec gun ban before the City Prosecutor’s Office here.
Naga City police spokesman SPO2 Randy Solano told newsmen on Wednesday that a bail of Php140,000 cash has been recommended for each of the eight security personnel facing the charges, Solano said.
According to Solano, it is the first time within the election period that security personnel of a politician were apprehended for possession of assorted firearms.
Solano said the respondents were armed escorts of Gov. Luis Raymund Villafuerte. He said those charged have no permit to carry outside of residence and no election exemption documents.
