Veterans Bank Signing

The LGU Guarantee Corporation recently granted Philippine Veterans Bank a P1.0 Billion Automatic Guarantee Line (AGL) for Qualified Local Government Unit Debt Instruments. The AGL will be used initially by PVB in its recently arranged LGU bond and loan facilities to attract prospective co-funders.  LGUGC and PVB are working further to enhance its cooperation and partnership in order to strengthen the credit market for the LGUs.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) registered strong business volume and revenue growth in 2009.  Full year unaudited income rose to P8.5 billion, 33% higher than 2008 and equivalent to a 13% Return on Equity and 1.3% Return on Assets.  Correspondingly, net income for the fourth quarter of 2009 was 7% better than 2008.

MANILA, Jan. 21, 2010-Retired Catholic Bishop Teodoro Bacani maintains he is against Joseph's Estrada's comeback bid for the presidency, saying the country needs a new leader.

Bacani, one of Estrada's spiritual advisers, said it's a high time to have genuine reforms in the government and that includes filling it up with better leaders.

"Personally, I am against his candidacy because the country really needs real reforms... wherein there is a new leader who will lead us," he said.

MANILA, Jan. 22, 2010- President Arroyo has no power to appoint the next chief justice of the Supreme Court, constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, said Friday.

Bernas, dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law School, said that Mrs. Arroyo will be violating the Constitution if she would insist in appointing the successor of Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

The Charter, he said, forbids the President from making appointments within 60 days before her term ends on June 30 this year.

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) recently opened 10 new branches beefing up its network to 60 branches nationwide. Last January 18th, PVB simultaneously opened 10 new branches all over the country. These are located in Pasay City, Malolos, Bulacan; Santiago City, Isabela; Olongapo; Lipa, Batangas; San Pablo, Laguna; Kalibo, Aklan; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Pagadian, Zamboanga de Sur; and Koronadal.  Late last 2009, the Bank opened 5 new branches in Luzon as part of its branch expansion and rationalization plan.

MANILA, Jan. 9 -Senator Richard J. Gordon is optimistic that millions of employees of delinquent employees could now re-avail of their benefits from the Social Security System (SSS) with the enactment of the SSS condonation law.

Republic Act No. 9903, or the Social Security Condonation Act, would also help ease the burden from non-compliant companies that were facing economic difficulties.

LEGAZPI CITY-Liberal Party standard bearer Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino acknowledged on Tuesday the surge in the latest Pulse Asia survey of his cousin and rival, former Defense Secretary Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro.

"My younger cousin's increase in figures in the latest survey, I admit, is dramatic," Aquino said.

The latest Pulse Asia survey conducted the first week of December showed Teodoro up by three points from his previous survey rating.

"But the increase is only in terms of small numbers."

MANILA, Oct. 23, 2009-Catholic bishops on Friday said that they will seek a dialogue with President Arroyo to express their concerns to aerial spraying of pesticides in banana plantations.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said all they want is to bring to Arroyo's attention concrete cases related to aerial dust cropping.

"We are hoping that the President will side [with] our concern, especially the demand of the affected residents from Davao, to stop aerial spraying," he said.

MANILA, Oct. 7, 2009-The National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) has formally appointed its new head.

Jose Cuisia, Jr., a prominent businessman and a member of the Opus Dei, was recently appointed as Chairman of the independent poll watchdog.

Mr. Cuisia succeeds Henrietta de Villa who resigned last month to devote more time to her work as head of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), which focuses on voter's education.

Namfrel is a poll watchdog accredited by the Commission on Elections to conduct quick count of votes.

MANILA, Sept 30, 2009-The Bishops of Samar Islands along with the local government units headed by Easter Samar Governor Ben Evardone have decided to give a posthumous award to the murdered priest, Fr. Cecilio Lucero.

Evardone said that this move to grant Lucero an award is a recognition and tribute to his involvement in creating peace and development in their province.

PhilHealth said this is to provide access and information to Filipinos on the agency's membership updates and renewal, claims and benefits, and premium remittance concerns.

Pili, Camarines Sur (8 September) -- Bikol now ranks first among the regions in the entire country in palay production growth rate based from the report of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).

Bikol posted a 17.3% palay production growth rate in the first semester of 2009 compared to the first semester of last year, the highest among the rice producing regions.

MANILA, Sept. 5- Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Saturday asked Malacañang to sign into law the Anti-Torture Bill once the House of Representatives ratifies the consolidated version of the landmark legislation.

The Senate ratified Wednesday the measure seeking to end the human rights violations allegedly committed by state agents. The reconciled version of bill was approved by the bicameral conference on Monday.

MANILA, Sept. 6 --The death count in the sinking of MV Superferry 9 off Siocon Bay near Zamboanga Peninsula Sunday morning rose to five as 900 passengers and crew were rescued while 63 others remained missing.

This developed as Philippine Coast Guard dispatched vessels BRP Corregidor (AE 891)and MCS 3009 from Puerto Princesa Port, Palawan to join the search, rescue and oil spill response operations.

NAGA CITY-A rights group in Bikol has expressed approval over the passage in a senate committee of a bill seeking to impose penalty on enforced and involuntary disappearance.

Paul Vincent Casilihan of Karapatan-Bicol said they were happy over the approval of the House Bill 5886 or the Anti-Involuntary Disappearance Bill in the Senate committee on justice and human rights. "This would strengthen the fight against perpetrators of involuntary disappearances in the country," he said.

MANILA, August 20, 2009- Amidst plans to revive the peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a Catholic bishop asked the government peace panel to avoid the same mistake it did in the past.

According to Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, the government must take into consideration last year's Supreme Court decision on the Memorandum of Agreement on ancestral domain (MOA-AD), which it ruled as being "unconstitutional".
