MANILA, Philippines (Feb 5, 2012) - Fighting for the first time in the 122-lb division, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. failed to knockout Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. but nonetheless lifted the WBO super bantamweight belt today via split decision at the Alamodome in Texas.
Saved for a slip in the second round, Donaire dominated the fight with his speed and solid punches. Vazquez, however, hung tough with his jabs that almost shut down Donaire's right eye.
Donaire unleashed a left hook and right upper cut combination in the ninth round that floored Vazquez but the Puerto Rican immediately stood up.
Vazquez tried to work his way back with solid jabs but lacked the power punch to pull off an upset.
Donaire got the two judges' nod with identical 117-110 score cards.
The third judge, however, in a decision that many saw as coming out of nowhere, gave the fight to Vazquez, 115-112.
With his 28th win, Donaire validated his status as the next best Filipino fighter behind Manny Pacquiao at the moment. (From Philstar.com)
